What is SPAM? SPAM
is the term that is used to describe what is known as
Unsolicited Commercial E-Mail (UCE) or Unsolicited Bulk
E-Mail (UBE). While it most commonly refers to messages that
attempt to sell you something you don't need, it also
includes common e-mail "scams" and even some types of
viruses.
Another type of SPAM that is filtered by products such as
SpamAnswer is "phishing". This is the act of sending an
e-mail that appears legitimate in the hopes of gathering
personal information. Often times, these messages attempt to
get you to follow a link to a site that will ask for your
Social Security Number, bank account numbers, or other
sensitive information. This information can then be used to
either steal from you, or even steal your identity. There
are also common e-mails that appear to be from some relative
of an overseas "royal family" that ask you to send money in
exchange for thousands of dollars in return for helping get
money out of their country.
These messages are all types of scams meant to steal from
you, and products such as SpamAnswer targets them and
removes them from your Inbox.
